CNN —More than 100 passengers and crew have fallen ill while on a three-week leg of a 107-night cruise with Cunard Cruise Line on the Queen Victoria, according to a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the report, 139 people on board – 123 passengers and 16 crew members – have reported gastrointestinal symptoms that include diarrhea and vomiting. The cruise line has increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and isolated ill passengers and crew, according to the report. The Queen Victoria is on a 107-night sailing that started in Southhampton, England, on January 11. In a statement to CNN, Cunard Cruise Line said, “Cunard confirms that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Gunmen burst into a home in central Mexico and abducted one of the volunteer searchers looking for the country's 114,000 disappeared and killed her husband and son, authorities said Wednesday. Cano’s volunteer group, Salamanca United in the Search for the Disappeared, said late Tuesday the gunmen shot Cano’s husband and adult son in the attack the previous day. State prosecutors confirmed husband and son were killed, and that Cano remained missing. At least seven volunteer searchers have been killed in Mexico since 2021. The volunteer searchers often conduct their own investigations —often relying on tips from former criminals — because the government has been unable to help.

“Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves,” the hurricane center said. “These rains will likely produce flash and urban flooding, along with possible mudslides in areas of higher terrain,” the National Hurricane Center warned. Tammy is expected to move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands – including Guadeloupe and Antigua and Barbuda – through Saturday night, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands on Sunday. A storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is possible for parts of the Leeward Islands. Rainfall totals for the Leeward Islands are expected to be 4 to 8 inches, but could reach a foot in places where the heaviest rain sets up.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Hurricane Norma is expected to further strengthen on Wednesday as it bears down on the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, home to popular tourist beach resorts, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). The Miami-based center upgraded Norma to a Category 1 hurricane earlier on Wednesday. "Rapid strengthening is forecast through tonight, and Norma could become a major hurricane on Thursday," the NHC reported, adding that gradual weakening of the hurricane is forecast as it approaches Baja California on Friday and Saturday. Norma's maximum sustained winds have reached 80 miles per hour (129 kph) as it heads north. The hurricane is located about 520 miles (837 km) south of the beach resort city of Cabo San Lucas.

Tropical depression 17 is located about 985 miles (1,585 km) west of the Cabo Verde islands, packing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55kph), the Miami-based forecaster said. NEW YORK (AP) — More than 30 Atlantic countries on four continents committed Monday to bolster coordination on economic development, environmental protection, maritime issues and more, the White House said. The adoption of the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation was completed Monday evening at a meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken ahead of the start of the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting. The White House pitched the forum as a way to improve cooperation between northern and southern Atlantic countries on key issues and come to agreement on a set of principles for the Atlantic region. The activists are pushing world leaders to act with greater haste to curb climate change. Many of the leaders of countries that cause the most heat-trapping carbon pollution will not be in attendance for this year's General Assembly.

CNN —Hurricane Lee has strengthened into a major Category 5 storm, packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 160 mph as it spins over the Atlantic well east of the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said in an 11 p.m. The hurricane was located about 700 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, the hurricane center said in the 11 p.m. advisory. How close will Hurricane Lee get to the US? An area of high pressure over the Atlantic, known as the Bermuda High, will have a major influence in how quickly Lee turns. The depression is expected to become a tropical storm later Tuesday. The next tropical storm will be given the name Lee. The hurricane is expected to grow significantly stronger by the weekend and is forecast to become the season’s third Category 3 or stronger hurricane as the weekend begins. CNN —Residents in the Southwest are bracing for heavy rains and potentially catastrophic flooding as Hurricane Hilary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm beginning Sunday and lasting into next week. Its core is expected to pass close to the peninsula Saturday night and then weaken into a tropical storm as it crosses into the US and Southern California.
